Reflection of the COMM 1043

After I have completed the COMM 1043, I’ve learnt that the process and importance of defining the target audience which is totally different from what I’ve learnt in the business subject. In the light of this, I have learnt that in publication, the selection of fonts, colour, words and order have to be consider based on the target audience cultural background and reading habit. On top of that, incorporate more visual communication will be able to increase the interested of reading of the audience as the role of visual communication has becoming more and more important as compare with written text communication. Moreover, I also learnt that the selection of the visual communication, the audience cultural background, religion and past knowledge has to be taken into consideration as well since different audience tend to have different interpretation.

Furthermore, upon the completion of the web blog discussion issue, I have learnt the importance of the ethical issue in the publication and the emergent of new media. As a result, it provides me a better understanding and changed my perception on the area of publication and design.

Lastly, I believe that what I have learnt in the COMM 1043 it will not only benefit me of the improvement of the communication skills, but also the understanding of the publication design.

The Crisis of Cartoon Publishing

This article illustrates the respond from the Muslim country after the published of the 12 caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad cartoon in the Danish newspaper. In the light of this, Professor Klausen, the author of The Cartoons that Shook the World claimed that certain cartoonist characters that published in the Danish newspaper was not intended to attack on Islam or the Prophet but rather used to attack on other newspaper. However, the cartoon has caused a huge protest by the Muslim country and resulted 450 people were killed and 800 were injured.

( The most potent cartoon drawn by Kurt Wetergaard as depicts the Prophet with a bomb in his turban)

Cartoons are frequently fascinating but somehow their value to historians lies in what they reveal. This means that cartoon actually does not explain the whole value of it because different people tend to have different interpretation which is mainly due to the different cultural background and past knowledge as suggested by Schriver (1997, p.365). In the light of this, the cartoonist should always take into consideration of the different regional culture before they publish any form of cartoon in the newspaper or magazine.

(Without dialog or subtitles, different cultural background audience tend to intrepre the meaning diffrently)

Free Speech or Hate Speech?

In relation to the Danish cartoon controversy some of the author claimed that “where is our right of freedom of speech and express our opinion?” (Jenkins 2009). This is because, after the Danish’s newspaper has published the Prophet Muhammad cartoon, the Danish flag was burned and certain newspapers were boycotted. In addition to that, editors, journalists and newspaper vendors have had their lives threatened. Similar case had happened to the cartoonist in the United Stated, Sean Delonas, who is being fired and boycotted by the nation after he published a political offensive cartoon to the United Stated President Obama (Brooklyn 2009). In relation to these two cases, it shows that trying to balance the scales between freedoms of expression on the one hand and respect for the feelings and beliefs of other people on the other hand is becoming an increasingly complex issue.

(The black monkey represent the United Stated First Black President Mr Obama)

In conclusion, the cartoonist should be able to draw a line in between the balance of the freedom of speech, political and religion as it has becoming an increasingly complex issue. On top of that, standardization of the publication rules and regulation worldwide will be able to minimize the conflict between countries.

Impact of the Photography

This article discussed about the power of photos which reflects people in Dubrovnik back in the early 1990s and will be publicize at The War Photo Limited Gallery. It is to dedicate the exclusive of the war photography which it is taken few years back in order to allow tourists and people to recall what had happened years ago at the beautiful and major tourist spot, Dubrovnik.

In today’s environment, the role of photograph which is not only restricted to keep the memory alive and recalling for the past, but also getting important in role of learning and elaboration (Bamford 2010). In other words, the usage of the photograph not only shows in the newspaper or magazine but also in other sector as well. This can be further proven by Burmark (2010) stated that, in the engineering, architecture, computer trades and even health care professions are dealing with visual literacy as the role of photograph has becoming equally important as compare with the written text. The reason why the photograph plays an important role in today’s environment is mainly due to the advancement of the technology, the emergent of internet which leads to the changing of the people’s living.

Biasness of Photography

Even though the photograph plays an important role as it is more impressive than words, however there are some biasness that the audience have to be bear in mind while interpreting the photograph. According to Brown (2009), the documentary photograph is not merely a reflection of reality as it is only showing one piece of the full event. In the light of this, the audience will tend to have a limited view of the whole landscape. Moreover, the photographer will tend to only show the photograph which they want it to be seen and the way they want it to be interpret by the audience. In addition to that, due to the advancement of the technology, the photograph can be easily edited by the photographer in order to achieve the desirable outcome. Therefore, sometimes the audience would not actually know whether the photograph is true or not but only believing it.

(This photograph shows how to editing skill will be able to change the original meaning of the photograph)

In conclusion, even though the role of photograph has become more significant as most of the audience will prefer visual than written literacy. Nevertheless the audience should be aware of the biasness of the photograph in order to interpret it correctly. Also the photographer should be more ethics not to change or mislead the facts while publishing the photograph.

IPad, Evolution Rather Than Revolution

A lot of tech commentators seem disappointed that the iPad feels more like an evolution between of iPhone rather than revolution. This is because the development of iPad will be more focusing on its content consumption. However, most of this content came from the existing Apple devices, iPhone such as audio and video from iTunes and content from App Store. In other words, for the iPhone users, iPad is nothing new merely it is just an iPhone with bigger size.

New Digital Literacy Era Created by IPad

According to Simpson (2010), more than two million applications have sold since the IPad has launched on April in United State. Therefore it is undeniable that the emergent of the IPad has created the positive opportunity for the software market. On top of that, the iBook application has provided the user better digital literacy reading experience whether it is article, newspaper or magazine. Furthermore, the digital literacy has become more convenience and popular as the user can easily download and store their favorite readings to their iPad. This also further explain by David (2010) the users will be able get anything on the iPad as they go online, so it is a chance for newspapers to get that much more exposure, in front of more readers. In the light of this, the future of the iPad will probably involve in educational area as it finger flipping design will most probably be able to increase the children interest of reading.

The development of iPad-vertising

It is undeniable that the advertisement plays an important role nowadays. The development of advertisement from print-based to digital text was mainly due to the changes of the consumer reading. In relation to this, the development of iPad will most likely be able to create a new form of advertisement space for the advertiser. For example the advertiser can place the digital advertisement on the digital newspaper in order to capture the audience attention while the user is reading the newspaper through the iPad.

In conclusion, due to the advancement of technology, it has change the way of living from time to time. In this case, the emergent of iPad has change the way of living in terms of reading experience and the usage of the computer but ardent fans of Apple would definitely have to wait a little longer for a better improvement in iPad. Nonetheless, it is undeniable that with the rapid growth of technology; iPad would definitely stands as the next must have device for every consumer in this era.

Privacy is Not Dead

Crisis of Social Networking
The emergent of the social networking such as Google Buzz, Facebook and Twitter has risen up the privacy issue of the end-users as its idea that making public information more public could violate user’s privacy. In relation of this, new privacy setting model has been implemented by Facebook in order to enhance the level of protection of its user’s information.

Use your friend lists

The new privacy setting model of Facebook allows the users to have more control on their private information as the users have the ability to control who they want their content being view. On top of that, the users can even apply different privacy settings regarding to different groups of friend list such as Family, Friends and Co-worker. By doing this, it enables the users to have greater level of privacy as they might not want to share their personal life photo or video with their co-worker.

Remove yourself from the search engine

Furthermore, the new policy model also allows the users to control their account’s visibility from the Facebook and other search engines. By doing this, it will be able to enhance the users' privacy as third parties cannot easily search or access to the users’ account through search engines.

Burger King challenge the Facebook privacy issue

Ad replacement which can be consider as the main source of income for a social networking. For instance Facebook has became the largest display advertiser, serving 176.3 billion display ads, versus Yahoo who served 131.6 billion banner ads (Nick 2010). Moreover, Facebook has always placed high level of rules and regulation and observation in the selection of the ad replacement. In the light of this, Facebook has banned one of the Burger King advertisements called Whopper Sacrifice as it has criticized the users’ privacy. This is because the advertisement required the users delete ten users from the friend list in order to exchange for a free whopper burger. By doing this, it has criticized the user privacy as the deleted user will tend to be disclosing in the user NewFeeds (Geerce 2010).

In conclusion, based on the above discussion it shows that the privacy of social networking can be well maintain through the advancement of the technology and the ethical of the social networking. On top of that, the role of end-user also placed heavy in maintaining the privacy issue as the end-user should aware of the privacy setting and practice it in regards of their social networking, otherwise it will become worthless even if the social networking implemented a higher level of privacy model.

Good Design for Screen Genre

In this part, I will use the power point slides of group presentation 1 and the individual presentation power point slide as a comparison for good design for screen genre.
Short and Straight to the Point
A good presentation writing technique is one that is directly headed to the point (Rothman 2005). With that, as shown in my individual presentation slide, it was simple and shorter with the important information being highlighted as compare with the group presentation. Therefore it will be able to enhance its visibility and easily for the reader to read. This can further proven by Reep (2006, p.148), word that been using when designing a document have to be simple, readable and avoid using the long and complex word in order to gain the reader attention.

Example of group presentation which contain lots of verbal informationExample of the individual presentation which contains short and straight to the point information

Effects of the Colour

Moreover, colour plays an important role in the document design. Therefore the second comparison will be made in terms of the colour used in the presentation. As for the group presentation slides, it is purely black words and white background design. If the reader only looking at the group presentation slides it looks fine and clean. However, if the group presentation is being present just after the individual presentation to the reader, it will not able to attract the reader attention since the individual presentation will be more attractive. This is because it used different types of eye-catching colour such as red to highlight the key words to the reader. This can be further proven by Reep (2006), colour in a document creates an image and helps a reader to move through a document and find specific kinds of information.

Example of group presentation that without any colour

Example of individual presentation with colour texts and also highlighted the main point

The Combination of Visual & Word

On the other hand, Kress & Leeuwen (2006, p.17) states that the document design need to understand the integration of texts and images to convey effective message. Therefore in the third comparison, the combination of texts and images will be used to compare between these two presentations. As for the individual presentation it looks more attractive as compare with the group presentation as it included lots of images in the explanation. This can be further support by Reep (2006) readers do not read only the printed words on a page; they also read the visual presentation of the text.

New Forms of Media Publishing

The new trend of online media

The forms of publishing have grown rapidly in the past decade. As a result, these days, people benefit from the emergence of new forms media publishing as they can obtained information easily especially in the Internet Era.

The new forms of media can be defined as the electronic communication that is made possible through the use of computer technology (Webopedia.com 2009).

Moreover, the new trend of Internet media has treated the traditionally way of media published such as print-based newspaper or magazine in terms of the degree of control and the regulation in publishing the news. For example the Malaysiadigest.blogspot was one of the few online alternative media that was able to conform to the ethical notion of unbiased reporting without much fear due to its lack of rules and regulation and the degree of control by the government. As a result, it has causes the generation Y nowadays, has become more political and news conscious. Also they are able to express their own expression in regards of any issue by leaving the comment in the discussion space as provided in the blogspot.

Youtube VS Copyright Issue

Research shows that, more than 80% of Malaysia Internet users viewed online video especially Youtube during the month of January 2010 (AdoiMagazine.com 2010). This shows that, by surfing into Youtube has become the rule of thumb for the Internet users. Therefore it has changed the way of people receiving or reading the information such as they rather spend time viewing on the relevant video clip than reading the print-based text.

Part of the reason is because of there are all sources of video clips that can be found in Youtube. Users can upload any video just by registering to become the member. Thus, 24 hours worth of video are being uploaded to the site every minute (Yahoonews, 2010). As a result, Youtube has been criticized frequently for failing to ensure that its online content address to the law of copyright.

This is because some of the videos uploaded are without proper permission such as music video or even video episode that haven officially release. As a result, in order to avoid the copyright issue and create a good brand name in both users and media production point of view, Youtube should strengthen and revise their rules on copyright issue.

Types and Structure of Blogging Community

"B" Community

In order to share the similar interest among the bloggers, I believe that creating a blogging community will be the most appropriate way. By doing this, it allow the blogger to build up around the same interest and communicating via blogs (Vinson 2006).

Types of "B" community

There are three different types blogging community which are single blog community, central connecting topic community and boudaried communities.

Single blog community which is owned by one owner or organization. The communities member have no power to control or change the blog since the power within control by the central blogger. Unlike the central connecting topic community which tend to link the blogs together with the same interest of topic. Therefore in the topic centric communities both power and identity is distributed across the community. Moreover the rich network of perspectives allows the communities to have many views on an issue, rather than one that view that as stated in the single blog community (White 2006). Furthermore the communities tend have greater power since the power is distribute accross the community and the subcommunities is able to formed easily.

On the other hand, the bondaries communities is those that requires member registration to join the community and are offered the chance to create blog. The owner of the boundaries communitites hold much of the control over the blog and have the right to delete other members comments (White 2006).
Moreover, members tend to make discussion among themselves in the community discussion board. An example for a boundaries communities blog will be kennysia.com. This blog is owned by Kenny Sia and it only allows registered members to leave comment on it.

Classification and Approaches of Blog

Different approaches for the “B” for Blogging

Blogging has grown into a worldwide phenomenon whereby majority of people is in the world of blogging regularly. Moreover Simons states (cited in Funnel, 2010) that blog has been classified into 9 different types which is pamphleteering, digest, advocacy, popular mechanics, exhibition, gatewatcher, diary, advertisement and news blog.

However, on the other hand, Quintagroup (2010) has further simplified the 9 classifications of blogs into 4 classifications which is personal, corporate, genre and media blogs. In this case, the blog classification as stated by Quintagroup will be more appropriate and widely acceptable by the public. This is because the way it classifies the blog is not only based on the types of contents, but also in the way those contents are delivered or written.

The exhibition and dairy blog will most likely be classified as the personal blog since the way it is conveyed is mostly towards to express or demonstrate the blogger personal express or idea.
Moreover, for the blog which often discusses on a specific issue or topic such as pamphleteering, digest, advocacy and gatewatcher blog will be classified as the genre blog in the point of view of the public.

Whereas exhibition, popular mechanics and advertisement blog is more concentrated towards more on commercial purposely such as demonstrate the product feature or recommendation of a particular product or services will be classified under the cooperate blog. In this case, the famous Asia blogger Kenny Sia’s blog will be fall under the cooperate blog. Since most of his post is for commercial purpose. In this case, Kenny Sia is explaining the feature of the IPhone in his post and the value plan that offer by the Maxis.

Lastly, the news blog will be classified as the media blog since it usually involves lots of pictures rather than just verbal communication in order to deliver the message more effectively.
